How to enchant an item with commands

There are two reliable ways to apply an enchantment through commands:

  1. /enchant — the quickest option. Hold the item and run /enchant @s minecraft:sharpness 5. It only works if the enchantment is normally valid for the held item.
  2. /give with components — for full control, including maxing out levels or stacking incompatible enchantments. On 1.20.5+ use the component form: /give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:5}].

Enchantments beyond the vanilla max (for example Sharpness X) are only possible with the /give component method or an anvil exploit, and may behave unexpectedly.

Enchantment levels and the enchanting table

  • The enchanting table needs 15 bookshelves placed one block away to unlock the highest-level options (up to level 30).
  • Lapis lazuli is consumed as part of the cost, and each enchant uses experience levels shown next to the option.
  • Combine enchantments and repair gear on an anvil; every operation raises the "prior work penalty", so plan your order to avoid the "Too Expensive!" cap.
  • Treasure enchantments like Mending, Frost Walker and Soul Speed cannot be obtained from a table — only from villagers, fishing, chest loot or bartering.

Enchantment conflicts you should know

Some enchantments are mutually exclusive on the same item. Common conflicts: Sharpness / Smite / Bane of Arthropods can't coexist; Silk Touch and Fortune are exclusive; Infinity and Mending conflict on a bow; the different Protection types don't stack usefully. When you paste a multi-enchant /give command, only compatible pairings behave correctly in survival.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the command to enchant an item in Minecraft?
Hold the item and run /enchant @s <enchantment_id> <level>, for example /enchant @s minecraft:unbreaking 3. Use the copy buttons in the table to grab the exact command per enchantment.
How do I get Sharpness 1000 or overpowered enchants?
Use the /give component method: /give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:1000}]. Extreme levels can cause visual glitches and are capped internally by the game.
What are treasure enchantments?
Enchantments that cannot come from an enchanting table — Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and the two curses. You obtain them from villager trades, fishing, raid drops, chest loot or piglin bartering.
Why can't I combine two enchantments?
Many enchantments conflict, such as the different damage enchantments on a sword, or Silk Touch and Fortune. Conflicting enchantments cannot be applied to the same item in survival.
Do these IDs work in Bedrock Edition?
The enchantment concepts are identical, but Bedrock uses numeric IDs and a different /enchant syntax. The namespaced IDs listed here are for Java Edition.
