How to use the /give command

The /give command puts items directly into a player's inventory. The syntax is /give <target> <item_id> [count], for example /give @s minecraft:diamond 64.

  1. Find the item below and copy its /give command with the button.
  2. Paste it into chat (you need cheats/operator) or a command block.
  3. Change @s to a player name or selector like @a to give to everyone.
  4. Edit the trailing number to set how many you want.

Since 1.13, all items use the namespaced ID format (minecraft:item_name). The minecraft: prefix is optional in most commands but always safe to include.

Stack sizes and NBT / components

  • Most blocks and resources stack to 64, many tools and armor to 1, and a few items like Ender Pearls to 16. The stack size is listed on each card.
  • You can attach data to a given item. On 1.20.5+ this uses components, e.g. /give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:5}] — see the enchantment ID list for values.
  • Custom names and lore use the custom_name and lore components with a JSON text value — build those in the tellraw & JSON generator.

Finding IDs the game doesn't list

In-game you can hover an item in the creative inventory with advanced tooltips enabled (F3+H) to see its ID at the bottom of the tooltip. This list covers the most-used items across building, combat, redstone, food and more; for the complete set of thousands of block and item IDs, the same naming pattern applies — lowercase words joined by underscores under the minecraft: namespace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the /give command in Minecraft?
It spawns items into a player's inventory: /give <target> <item_id> [count]. For example, /give @s minecraft:oak_planks 64 gives you a full stack of oak planks.
Do I need the minecraft: prefix on item IDs?
It is optional in most commands because minecraft is the default namespace, but including it is always correct and required when there could be ambiguity with modded or datapack items.
How do I give an item with a custom name or enchantment?
Attach components on 1.20.5+, such as diamond_sword[enchantments={sharpness:5}] or [custom_name='...']. Use the enchantment list and tellraw generator on this site to build those values.
Why does my /give command say 'Unknown item'?
The ID is misspelled or the item does not exist in your version. Copy the exact ID from this list, and make sure the item was actually added in your Minecraft version.
How many items can I give at once?
You can request more than a stack — the game splits it into multiple stacks. Some interfaces cap the count, but /give @s minecraft:stone 6400 works fine in command blocks.
