How the 8:1 Nether ratio works

To travel from the Overworld to the Nether, divide the X and Z coordinates by 8. To go the other way, multiply by 8. The Y (height) coordinate never changes. So an Overworld point at 800, 70, -1600 maps to 100, 70, -200 in the Nether — meaning a short Nether tunnel can cover a huge Overworld distance.

This is the single most useful trick for building fast travel hubs and linking bases efficiently.

How to link two Nether portals reliably

  1. Build and light your first portal in the Overworld and note its coordinates (press F3).
  2. Convert those coordinates here to find the target Nether location.
  3. Travel through, then dig to the calculated Nether coordinates and build a second portal there manually — do not rely on the auto-generated one.
  4. Light it, step through, and the two portals will now be permanently paired.

Manually placing the second portal is the key step. If you let Minecraft auto-generate the return portal, it can link to the wrong location when portals are close together.

Portal linking range and common pitfalls

  • When you enter a portal, the game searches for an existing portal within a 128-block radius (in the destination dimension) before creating a new one.
  • If two Overworld portals are within ~1024 blocks of each other, their Nether coordinates land within 128 blocks — so they can share or steal each other's Nether portal.
  • Keep portals well spaced, or build dedicated linked pairs to avoid cross-linking.
  • Remember the Nether ceiling is at Y=128; extremely high Overworld builds may need careful Y planning.
