MiniMessage is for Paper/Adventure (chat, holograms, deluxemenus). Hex works with plugins that translate &#RRGGBB. Spigot §x is the vanilla-compatible per-character form.
How to make a gradient in Minecraft
- Type the text you want to color — a player name, MOTD line, hologram or chat message.
- Set your start and end colors. Add extra stops for a rainbow or multi-color blend.
- Toggle bold or italic if you want the whole string styled.
- Choose the output format for your platform and copy. The tool spreads the colors evenly across every visible character for you.
Which output format do I need?
MiniMessage
The modern format used by Paper, Velocity and the Adventure library. Plugins like DeluxeMenus, Chatty, and most 1.18+ setups accept <gradient:#a:#b>text</gradient> directly. It is the cleanest option and re-flows automatically if the text changes.
Hex (&#RRGGBB)
A per-character list of hex codes with the ampersand prefix. Use this with plugins that translate hex color codes (Essentials 1.16+, many chat and nickname plugins).
Spigot (§x)
The vanilla-compatible form. Each character is prefixed with §x§R§R§G§G§B§B. This works almost everywhere a section sign is accepted, including books and holograms, at the cost of a long string.
Where gradients look best
- Player names & ranks — a subtle two-stop blend reads better in chat than a busy rainbow.
- Server MOTD — pair this with our MOTD generator for an eye-catching server list entry.
- Holograms & scoreboards — MiniMessage gradients keep titles crisp at any length.
- Books & lore — use the §x format so the colors survive when saved to NBT.
Keep contrast in mind: very dark stops disappear against Minecraft's dark chat background, so favor mid-to-bright shades for readability.
